Monkeylectric Bicycle Lights

I just found a really crazy product, Monkeylectric M133 LED Bike Lights. I can't wait to try these out and wanted to share it with everyone else who is interested in bikes and has a penchant for art. I live in Austin, which besides being known as the Live Music Capital is also a huge biking community influenced by their resident superstar, Lance Armstrong. With a huge population of musicians and old hippies, you always have a large crowd of artists as well. So I know these are going to get a lot of attention when I ride around Town Lake near downtown Austin. Make sure you check out some of the videos of these lights in action. They are truly amazing!

These lights combine digital light effects (generated by low energy LED lights) with a powerful graphics synthesizer system that has been pre-programmed with different effects by different artists. You can fully customize how the patterns and colors appear to create literally thousands of colors and patterns. You can alter the colors, patterns, and the speed which will allow complete control of the mood or activity in different ways.

Patterns and Colors

When setting up the lights you can select one to four patterns or all nine. The control of the patterns and colors is done very simply from some buttons on the control panel. In just seconds you can completely re-configure the look and feel of the lights. They are also altered by the speed at which you ride your bike. The patterns are very cool as you can just tell by the names:

  • Zigzag

  • Hypno

  • Teleport

  • Brain Wave

  • Fire Storm

  • Fracture

  • Grind

  • Amoeba

  • Spread Spectrum

All the patterns are displayed at different levels of activity on Monkeylectrics website.

Most of the bikes you see in the included videos either used one or two sets of lights per tire. They are available on the Monkeylectric Website Store or I found you can save around 15% at Amazon.

Installation

Installation is a snap for most all bike wheels. You just slide it in between your spokes and attach it in 2 places with zip ties through the slots on the unit. It has 3 mounting slots. After attaching the first 2 mounting slots, you simply position it along the spokes so that you can attach the third slot making it completely secure. There is information on their website that also shows how to use a steel wire in place of one of the plastic ties as an anti-theft strap. I have provided a quick video link so you can see exactly how easy it is.It is not the proper format to be embedded here so you will have to copy and paste the URL into your browser to watch it.

Safety

These lights will obviously make you a lot safer because only a fool couldn't help but notice you coming. That being said though, as much as they make you safer they might cause a bit of a safety hazard to others since they will be very distracting to those who are driving. Use discretion  if you are in a trafficked area. You might want to pick a location that will not cause problems like a biking trail or park to show off your new toy. Although these units are rugged and designed for the weather, they are not designed be used at speeds over 30 mph or on a motorized scooter or bike. They also won't work on racing bikes which have flat spokes.

Customized Solutions

Customized Solutions

Monkeylectric can provide fully customized solutions. These make great advertising platforms for companies who want their name remembered after some big event. These can be pursued through an inquiry at their website.

The company was founded by an engineer with an artistic side. I come from an engineering background myself and know this is indeed a scarce combination. Given the company's roots they understand the wants and desires of tinkerers and make available all schematics and details so you can try to customize their product. However, once you start tinkering it will void the one-year warranty that they provide with the product against manufacturing defects. They seem to be helpful and even claim they will help with advice. All the details are under the hacking section on their site.
