Bottled Water vs. Tap Water

There are a world of reasons for ditching regular bottled water and using a re-useable water bottle. The benefits range from environmental, to health-related and economic reasons.

Every day we are reminded on the television that we are destroying our planet. We purchase over 29 BILLION plastic water bottles every year and about 8 out of 10 of those wind up in a landfill. Each and every plastic bottle we don't purchase reduces that amount and saves enough energy to power a standard light bulb for around 6 hours.

The health benefits of tap vs. bottled water have been documented with many consumer reports showing high concentrations of bacteria growth in bottled water products. Additionally, public water sources have the benefit of fluoride added to the water to prevent tooth decay.

The economic reasons are not hard to ignore, With bottled water costing .50 to 2.00 for a bottle we are paying more for our drinking water than our gasoline. The average person supposedly consumes 22 gallons of bottled water per year. That's about 280 10-ounce bottles apiece. That means a married couple could save on average $500-1100 per year.

The only thing I can see that we possibly lose by not using our own bottle and tap water is a small amount of convenience.

Until recently even though all these arguments are good I just couldn't see giving up the bottled water and using my tap. My local water heavily chlorinates the water and it just doesn't taste good. Now there are an array of water bottles with filters on them that help remove chlorine tastes and any other impurities your worried about, so I decided to get green. I was amazed at the array of choices and I think you will be too. I went online and bought several different brands to find out which one works best for me. Besides some models are better suited for different activities. You might choose a different one for your bike than for hiking or just sipping during the day. And I have to admit I don't like to do dishes everyday so I need at least 6 or 7 so I always have a clean one handy. Each bottle typically treats 80-100 gallons of water. You don't have to replace the whole bottle in most cases, you just replace the filters. Here are three of the ones I chose and have been happy with.

Sports Bottle with Level 2 Filter

If your someone who is on the go and like a sporty bottle that will fit on your bicycle bottle holder or in your car holder this is a great choice. I was impresses that it was made out of higher quality, heavier gauge plastic. It is designed to treat up to 80 gallons of water so if it were your only bottle might last about 3 months. As I said but multiples so you always have a clean one and the set will last much longer. They remove bad taste, chlorine and heavy metals such as Lead Mercury and Copper.

Clear2GO Bottle with Filter and Cartridge Replacements

This has turned out to be one of my favorites and likely the one I will stock up on in future orders. It has a generous 24 oz capacity so if you are going to be out and about for a while you won't run out.

Ever hear of a microbial cyst? It is a microorganism at a resting or dormant stage which can turn into a bacterium. The filters on this brand remove 99.9% of microbial cysts so you don't need to worry about bacteria growth that is in such high concentrations in bottled water. It uses a NanoCeramic filter technology designed by NASA which treats an awesome 100 gallons of water. The bottle costs a little more than some others but consider that the extra 20 gallons of treatment over many other filters is equivalent to an extra 160 large 16 oz. Bottles of water. The replacements come 2 or 3 to a pack.

Fit & Fresh Water Filtration Bottle

If your looking for a more economical solution the Fit & Fresh water bottle is a great choice. It costs roughly half the cost of most of the other sports type bottles. The replacement filters bought in packs cost less than $4.00. Not bad considering it still treats 75 gallons of water. I live in a heavily chlorinated water area and the double stage filtration on the bottle did a good job of removing the unpleasant smell and taste. It has a peculiar design to the bottle but despite its appearance hold 20 oz. I will usually through a few of these in a cooler when I'm going to a sporting event, and find myself using this model the most around the house. Because of the cost it was convenient to order more of these for everyday use.
